N.J. Vows Not to Be Preempted On Rules for Chemical Safety

Summary


State officials railed Friday against new federal regulations for chemical company security, saying the rules would only weaken safety in North Jersey and the rest of the Garden State.

The rules announced by the Department of Homeland Security require the nation's 15,000 chemical plants to submit to security inspections and draft plans for protecting themselves against terrorist attacks. But they also suggest federal regulations could supersede New Jersey rules that are even tougher. They take effect April 4.
