Summary
NO ONE disputes that Bergen County needs a new detention center for its youth. , , , , At best, the current facility is run by caring and competent staff who worry every day about the safety of the kids housed there. The facility is old, rundown and rife with serious disrepair: antiquated manual locks on every youth's room, persistent plumbing problems, a floor plan that complicates evacuation in the event of a fire and exposed suicide risks on door hinges and sills. This building, long past its prime, represents one of the county's most pressing public concerns.
The debate over the future of this building, and two public proposals for its replacement, consumed too much of the past year.
