Though the Mets might like to have Oliver Perez back, they took a step Monday to prepare for the possibility that he will take his talented left arm and his erratic performance somewhere else, offering the free agent starter salary arbitration - and assuring themselves of at least getting compensation if he leaves.

Perez is the only one of the team's 11 free agents who was tendered an offer. Though the decision to offer Perez arbitration was a simple one -- assuring the Mets of receiving a first-round pick and a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds in the first-year player draft if he departs and retaining him at a reasonable cost for one year if he somehow agreed to arbitration -- the decision to not offer the other players was simple, too.
