Senior citizens would receive rebate checks averaging $1,000 under a property tax relief plan being considered by Governor McGreevey and legislative leaders, two sources said.

The plan would represent about a 33 percent boost from the maximum $750 rebate checks they now receive. Officials are also considering at least doubling the average $250 check that middle- class homeowners received last year, sources said.
