Malpractice Insurer Fined $10,000 Over Marketing

Summary


A small writer of medical malpractice insurance in New Jersey has paid a $10,000 fine to the state Department of Banking and Insurance, following complaints about its marketing practices.

New Jersey Physicians United Reciprocal Exchange (NJ PURE), a not- for-profit insurance carrier, also agreed to drop a federal lawsuit it brought with Dr. Daniel Beim, a New Brunswick obstetrician- gynecologist who has liability insurance with the carrier. The federal complaint, filed in federal district court in Newark, challenged the constitutionality of the state statute under which the company was disciplined.
