DENVER - John Maine walked into Jerry Manuel's office Wednesday afternoon for what should have been a simple conversation. Manuel already had decided and announced that Maine would get the ball Sunday night for his next start, a decision that Manuel said he needed the night to sleep on.

But when the door closed it didn't open again for almost 40 minutes. On one point the two men agreed - Maine has got to get back to throwing a fastball that can be a devastating weapon. Maine assured the manager that he's healthy, which he needed to assure him of because his velocity has dropped from the 95 mph to almost 88.
