PASSAIC - Lightning struck the steeple of a magnificent, century- old Gothic church early Sunday, setting it afire and shooting flames high into the inky sky.

The national landmark St. John Lutheran Church at 140 Lexington Ave. escaped with minimal damage after nine firefighters formed a human chain and climbed 18 stories into the smoke-filled steeple to douse flames.
