The garbage bag tied over the blue-and-white hospital sign at Kinderkamack and Old Hook roads told the story: Pascack Valley Hospital is essentially closed.
As of 7 a.m. today, the hospital is no longer receiving ambulances or admitting patients. Elective surgery ended last month. The last baby, a 9-pound, 13-ounce boy, was born at 8:51 Monday morning. At 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, the halls were empty and only four patients were being treated in the E.R. Christmas stockings hung from the ceiling and a desktop Christmas tree graced the nurses station. "We've got to get it in while we can," a staffer said.
