NEW YORK - Over and over, Fred Wilpon repeated the gospel, that all roads to recovery lead to the Mets' new savior, Omar Minaya. The principal owner didn't just nod approvingly at his freshly minted GM, he gazed adoringly, saying, "This is the man we wanted all along."

The coronation lasted for nearly two hours, capping off the single-greatest endorsement a GM has ever enjoyed at Shea. But beyond the perimeter of Wilpon's fog, there was little joy at the ballpark Thursday, even among Met employees. Most of them were saddened, if not embarrassed, that Jim Duquette had been disposed for no good reason other than Wilpon's bizarre infatuation with Minaya.
