Any minute now, one of our middle school daughters is going to ask to go shopping for new clothes for school. I can see them now pondering their back-to-school wardrobe possibilities, flipping the pages of the exuberant catalogs that burst through our mail slot, threatening to drown our house in capitalistic fervor.

Soon we'll be at the mall with everyone else, looking for a parking place, looking for the right stores, looking to fit in. In the affluent suburbs of North Jersey, the way you dress, the way you look determines much of your daily existence in the tween years and beyond.
