NEWARK - Reputed Philadelphia-South Jersey mob boss Joseph "Skinny Joey" Merlino was acquitted Monday in federal court on conspiracy and murder charges stemming from a 1996 shooting.

Merlino remained in federal custody, however, as he continues to serve a 14-year term from a related conviction in Philadelphia.
