Math Competition Gets the Juices Flowing ; 600 Area Students Vie for Trophies and Prizes

Dividing 76,628 by 13, or adding two 10-digit numbers may not be typical kid fun. But 600 students in the Bergen County Academies Math Competition on Sunday found a way to enjoy math as they hunkered over a 50-problem, 90-minute test.

Getting quizzed on variables and word problems gave students from New Jersey, New York and Connecticut a chance to win a trophy, build their self-esteem and -- if they did well -- a better-than-average shot at going to the high school or college of their choice, organizers said.
