PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - There are hundreds of pitchers like Valerio de los Santos floating through spring training this month - hard throwers with control problems, certain to vanish in a few weeks. But the Mets' left-hander is no ordinary transient, not after having savagely beaned the Cubs' Adam Greenberg with a 92-mph fastball four years ago.

Perhaps you remember the heartbreaking circumstances: Greenberg was appearing in his first major-league game July 5, 2005, stepping in for his first at-bat, first pitch. Santos, working out of the Marlins' bullpen, overthrew his fastball, as he's tended to do his entire career.
