NEW YORK It was Carlos Delgado's third strikeout of the night and the night wasn't even over - which explained the explosion that followed. There he was, face to face with home plate umpire Mark Wegner, venting over the fastball that may or may not have whispered over the outside corner, depending on whose eyesight you trusted.

To Wegner, the strike was a surgically placed, putaway pitch, executed just as Roger Clemens had intended. To Delgado, the pitch was yet another reason to curse a dreadful 2007 season - a slump that's persisted long enough to raise questions about whether the Mets' first baseman has fast-forwarded to the decline phase of his career.
