BAGHDAD, Iraq - Three drivers in bomb-laden cars inched through traffic toward separate army checkpoints Tuesday, waiting to reach Iraqi soldiers inspecting vehicles before setting off explosions in rapid succession.

The resumption of insurgent suicide bombings after a three-day lull killed 18 people in just seven minutes near the northern town of Hawija. The bloodshed coincided with claims by a Sunni Arab politician that he was negotiating with insurgents to bring them into the political process in embattled Iraq.
