William Carlos Williams, who was born in Rutherford, where a civic hall is named for him, selected Paterson as the title and subject of his greatest work.

One of the greatest American writers of the 20th century, he practiced medicine but decided later in life to write about the Silk City -- one of the country's most strike-ridden cities between 1850 and 1914.
