NEW YORK For a flickering moment Andy Pettitte must've felt like it was his 21-win season in 1996 all over again, dominating the Mets with a potent four-seam fastball and turning Johan Santana into the day's second-best starter. The Yankees had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning and considering how effectively Pettitte was throwing he had five strikeouts in 12/3 innings Willie Randolph was inching closer to doomsday.

That's how fragile the Mets' world has been lately: Derek Jeter, who needed 128 at-bats to hit his first home run in 2008, blasted a two-run shot off Santana, and suddenly all the crises that've threatened to swallow up the Mets were about to be ratcheted up again.
