PRESIDENT Bush's proposal to help illegal immigrants sheds light on an inconvenient fact. Illegal immigrants often perform the low- skilled, low-wage, sometimes dangerous jobs that Americans avoid. Certain sectors of the nation's economy depend heavily on the labor of undocumented workers.
"Out of common sense and fairness," Mr. Bush said this week, "our laws should allow willing workers to enter our country and fill jobs that Americans are not filling." He was talking about dishwashers, janitors, maids, farm workers, the people who clean the meat- grinding machines in slaughterhouses, and many others who fill low- paying, sometimes undesirable jobs.See the full content of this document
