LOYAL SUPPORTERS of the Bergen County Democratic Organization's chairman finally have something good to say in public: "Joe Ferriero, he's no Rod Blagojevich." The state of politics in America is so low I expect tourists walking past the historic Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C., will assume it was named after the Seventies film about rats.

Rodents are rising to the surface from New Jersey to Illinois. Governor Blagojevich was arrested last week in what appears to be, even by today's standards, an extraordinary scandal. He is alleged to have put President-elect Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat up for sale, tried to finagle high-paying jobs for himself and his wife, and in the accusation that touched my heart the most, tried to get unsympathetic editorial writers at The Chicago Tribune fired.
