NORTH HALEDON - The "wet down" is a staple of volunteer fire departments, evoking images of Small Town, U.S.A. Fire departments from neighboring towns baptize new firetrucks with water from hoses on their own trucks, then socialize over beer and a barbecue.

The Ramsey department recently invited North Haledon to a wet down for its new aerial, or ladder, truck. Thus began a controversy. Ramsey asked the 92-year-old North Haledon fire company to send its own brand-new aerial truck to Ramsey, about 10 miles as the crow flies, to provide backup while Ramsey and neighboring fire departments celebrate on Aug. 21.
