Governor Signs Medical Malpractice Law ; $78m for Doctors, but No Caps On Awards

TRENTON - Governor McGreevey signed into law a compromise measure Monday that is designed to hold down medical malpractice insurance costs while preserving a patient's right to sue.

The agreement, which will create a $78 million fund to help physicians pay for malpractice insurance, comes after a two-year battle between doctors and trial lawyers over whether limits should be placed on malpractice awards. In the end, no caps were put in place.
