Bartolo Colon kicked off the competition for the vacant two rotation spots and showed he's battle ready. In two innings, Colon gave up one run on two hits, and touched 93 mph with his fastball. The right-hander was "pretty much the Bartolo I knew," manager Joe Girardi said after the Phillies' 5-4 victory in the Grapefruit League opener at Steinbrenner Field.

Colon, 37, got Ryan Howard to fly out to the opposite-field warning track to end the first inning, and yielded a slicing triple by Ben Francisco to start the second. He walked one, with no strikeouts, and got a double play grounder. "If he's healthy, if his velocity is where it used to be (94-95 mph), he can pitch," said Mark Teixeira, who felt Colon was "a tick below where he was" in his prime.
