THERE ARE too many hospitals in North Jersey. Some of them are going to close. It is inevitable, bound to happen. Fewer patients are using them, those patients aren't staying as long as they used to, and many are uninsured and can't pay for their care.

Some hospitals are declaring bankruptcy, most recently Pascack Valley in Westwood and Barnert in Paterson. More will do so. Three other New Jersey hospitals have gone bust in the last 18 months, including PBI Regional in Passaic. Others are closing voluntarily.
