Calif. Seniors Sue Glaxo Over Generic Paxil ; Assert Consumers Forced to Overpay

GlaxoSmithKline PLC, the world's second-biggest drug maker, was sued Thursday by California seniors, who claim the company is marketing a sham generic form of the Paxil antidepressant to force consumers into paying higher prices.

Glaxo has an agreement with Pharmaceutical Resources Inc.'s Par Pharmaceutical to sell an unbranded version of paroxetine, the key ingredient in Paxil. Brentford, England-based Glaxo reached the agreement with Par Pharmaceutical, which is based in Woodcliff Lake, to settle a lawsuit after Canadian drug maker Apotex Inc. introduced its own generic form of the medicine.
