Gateway Tunnel Gets Early Nod From U.S. Senate

Summary


The proposed trans-Hudson River rail tunnel known as the Gateway Tunnel Project received a minor boost Tuesday when the U.S. Senate approved $15 million to study the plan.

The tunnel plan, which would increase the number of NJ Transit and Amtrak trains into Manhattan, still faces major political hurdles and competition for scarce transportation dollars, particularly from another cross-river rail tunnel plan: the extension of New York City's No. 7 subway line to Secaucus. But federal lawmakers said the Gateway study funding was a potentially significant first step toward increasing rail access to New York and reducing traffic congestion.
