WOODLAND PARK -- Former Passaic County Sheriff Ed Englehardt was hospitalized Sunday morning when he became ill while walking his dog on Garret Mountain.

A patrol officer saw Englehardt in his car in the office building parking lot of 1 Garret Mountain Plaza off New Street around 10 a.m. and called for an ambulance because he "looked under the weather," Sheriff's Department spokesman Bill Maer said. Sheriff Jerry Speziale heard the call. Upon arriving at the scene, Speziale drove Englehardt to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson himself rather than wait for the ambulance.
