After years of local outcry, Ford Motor Co. has agreed to remove toxic paint sludge buried in the Ramapo River flood plain in Hillburn, N.Y.

The dump site is adjacent to the auto giant's former assembly plant in Mahwah and upstream from municipal wells in Mahwah and Oakland and a water supply pump station for the Wanaque Reservoir, which serves millions of New Jersey residents.
