JONI MITCHELL warned us that "you don't know what you've got till it's gone." Fortunately, Governor McGreevey seems to know what we've got in the Highlands and is taking meaningful steps to protect this backyard paradise. So far, he is getting strong support from citizens fed up with sprawl and concerned about their drinking water.
Why are the Highlands so important? They provide drinking water to more than half of New Jersey's residents, habitat to more than 250 threatened or endangered species, and recreational opportunities for more than 14 million people annually, more than Yellowstone National Park.
