BASEBALL is more than a sport. It is the game on the field, but it is also legend and myth, inextricably woven into our national identity. America's pastime is one of statistics, stamina, and artistry.

But some of baseball's mythic heroes, like their ancient counterparts, live with tragic flaws. After more than a year of listening to testimony and looking at evidence, a federal grand jury last week handed down a six-count indictment against Roger Clemens, the powerhouse pitcher with a stack of Cy Young Awards who should have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, but instead may be facing jail time for allegedly lying to Congress about his use of steroids.
