PROSPECT PARK - A solemn but routine ceremony commemorating Circassian Memorial Day went anything but smoothly Friday as an unexpected crowd held a demonstration, and two children dressed in traditional clothing fainted in the heat.
About 70 people, mostly Circassian residents of Prospect Park, Haledon, and Hawthorne, gathered on North 10th Street outside the municipal building at 4 p.m. for the ceremony, which marks the 1864 expulsion of 1.4 million Circassians from their homeland in the northern Caucasus by an invading Russian army.See the full content of this document
