Space is literally the final frontier in "Firefly," a self- styled "sci-fi Western" with a short TV life but a long cult following.

It was this strong fan base that allowed series creator Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel") to not only resurrect the moribund series for the big screen in his new movie "Serenity" (it opened Friday) but to do it John Wayne style: by sticking to his guns.
