Officials are assessing the damage now that a federal law- enforcement program that issued more than $8.7 million to North Jersey towns and cities in recent years was eliminated in congressional budget battles.

Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., D-Paterson, met Monday with police and fire officials at the Passaic County Public Safety Academy in Wayne to discuss the elimination of Community Oriented Police Services (COPS), which had distributed tens of millions of dollars in grants statewide to hire police officers, upgrade technology or upgrade school security systems.
