Last week, while the women in our workplace discussed a story about whether tailored knee-length shorts are appropriate office attire, the guys squinted at the accompanying photo and asked, man after man, "What's the difference between that and culottes?"
A culotte is not a pair of shorts that look like shorts; it's a pair of shorts disguised as a skirt. In the 1960s, courageous young women changed the world, or at least the junior high school dress code, by brazenly attending class in culottes. Many were suspended, but the authorities finally relented and by the early 1970s it was widely acceptable for girls to wear not just culottes but all kinds of pants to school.See the full content of this document
