Exit the 'Accidental Governor'

Summary


DICK CODEY was at best a long-shot candidate for election as governor, beginning the day last August when Jim McGreevey announced he was gay and would resign the post in November. The smart money immediately favored Jon Corzine to win the Democratic nomination and the general election this year.

Why was this? Two reasons. First, Corzine is very rich and, in essence, had bought his seat in the Senate in a $63 million campaign he paid for himself. He could do the same with the gubernatorial race. This was a very pleasing prospect to county Democratic leaders. They would not have to finance the guy at the top of the ticket. Corzine would not only take care of his own expenses, he would subsidize candidates for lesser posts.
