NEWARK - The former president of a union local representing heavy equipment operators was sentenced to 27 months in prison Tuesday by a judge who said he sold out union members by taking bribes from contractors.

"This union is corrupt, and you were at the heart of it," U.S. District Judge Stanley R. Chesler told Peter O. Stranne-mar, 66, of Blairstown in re- jecting his plea for a shorter sentence.
