SAN FRANCISCO Spring training is always a time of optimism and expectations. For some, they are realistic and for some they are dreams. And when Pedro Martinez spoke on the very first day of camp he sounded convinced his dreams were real.

He spoke of making 30 starts. He raved about his conditioning and his arm, convinced that he was feeling better than he had in years. Asked when he had last felt this good, he spoke like he was recalling a childhood memory.
