If it feels like a time warp has brought you directly from opening day to the All-Star break, don't be alarmed. The first 3 1/ 2 months of the season really did become a blur: The Mets went from bad to good, to bad to good enough (for now). The Yankees remain too big to fail, although that proclamation must just be the kiss of death.

The game's tentacles will tighten their grip soon enough, as we learn if the Braves and Rangers are for real (almost certainly) and if the Phillies and Angels have a second-half surge in them (looking unlikely).
