Edict Bars Dogs' Use Against Detainees ; Passaic Jail Complies with New U.S. Policy

Summary


The Passaic County Jail can no longer use dogs to control immigration detainees after a federal edict prohibiting the use of canines for population control at any of the 400 detention facilities in the United States.

The policy change follows reports that detainees at the jail had been terrorized by dogs. Hospital records showed that at least one detainee was treated for dog bites in May at Barnert Hospital in Paterson, according to the latest reports, by National Public Radio on Nov. 17. NPR published the record on its Web site.
