Just a few doors in on a street that begins at the Atlantic Ocean you'll find the Sandpiper Inn, a quaint bed and breakfast in the charming shore town of Spring Lake. Up the flower-lined path, the front door opens onto its sophisticated signature restaurant, Black Trumpet.

Our first visit, on a quiet weeknight, was a virtually perfect dining experience. The staff was welcoming and professional, immediately whisking away the wine we brought and seating us at a window table dressed with crisp linens, a small shaded oil lamp and a fresh rose. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" played softly in the background.

The atmosphere in this carpeted dining area, to the right of the entrance, is warm and clubby, with rich woods, hunter green and burgundy tones, and pastoral framed prints. Our server wore a dark tie embroidered with the restaurant's initials, "BT," in gold.
