As you drive Route 9W, Mama Mexico looms large, then hits you with all the subtlety of a freight train.

Bright murals coat the walls. Lights change colors. The liquor behind the bar is dramatically tiered, the better to show off the 150 kinds of tequila. Colored chandeliers cover the ceilings. A mariachi band blares tirelessly (it also takes requests). The menu is enormous and overwhelming. The margaritas are tall and strong. A flashy translucent staircase leads to more mayhem on a second floor. And at the next table, an employee in a suit is calmly pouring tequila down the throat of a middle-aged guy while his friends applaud.

Eating Out: Mama Mexico in Englewood Cliffs

After opening two locations in Manhattan, Juan Rojas Campos brought Mama Mexico to Englewood Cliffs last December. Its prices are as high as an upscale restaurant, but the atmosphere at dinnertime, at least can come closer to a festive cantina party.
