Members of the state's National Guard who return home from Iraq with new, four-legged companions - adopted stray dogs from the gulf - can have the pooch examined for free under a new program established by the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association.

The adoption of these stray animals, reportedly numerous, by U.S. armed forces serving in Iraq intrigued Dr. Clifford J. Sporn, the NJVMA president from Cumberland County.
