A William Paterson University music student's conviction on a drug charge was reversed Tuesday by an appellate court, which agreed with the defendant's claim that a prosecutor abused his discretion in resolving the case.

Jovan Alvarez of Ridgefield appealed his conviction of Aug. 15, 2008, on grounds that the prosecutor, who was not named in the decision, abused his discretion in refusing the defendant admission into the pretrial intervention program. PTI is a probation-like program available to certain defendants that gives them a clean record upon successful completion.
