Drinking at College: More Reason Than Ever to Say No

Summary


Last summer, as another crop of 18-year-olds was heading off to college for the first time, college presidents around the country started to question whether the country's legal drinking age still makes sense.

Those open to lowering the legal age suggested that one way to curb binge drinking on campuses would be to make drinking less clandestine. By allowing undergraduates to be served in a bar - and presumably not over-served - perhaps we could prevent the out-of- control scenes in fraternity house basements and off-campus apartments where a drunken student could end up a victim of alcohol poisoning, date rape or other dangers.
