Dispenser Eyed in Fuel Leak

Summary

DUMONT -- A leaky dispenser is being blamed for fuel seeping into the ground at a gas station on Washington Avenue, spreading fumes to nearby businesses and causing a road closure.

The portion of Washington Avenue between Grant and Cresskill avenues was closed for about two weeks last month, after business owners complained of gasoline fumes coming from the sewer system. The Bergen County Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team traced the leak to the Gulf gas station at the intersection of Washington and Grant avenues, which was closed on March 2. The roadway was later closed to ventilate the sewer system and reopened March 18.
