Digitizing History ; Innodata Puts Records of a Pacific Exploration On the Web

Summary


Fragile, yellowed documents are given a new lease on life when digital images of the relics are posted on the Internet by Hackensack-based Innodata Isogen.

On Wednesday, the company's latest effort - the digitization of 15,000 images for the Smithsonian Institution Libraries - will be unveiled in a Web site documenting a Pacific exploration mission that sent 346 men on six vessels to exotic lands such as Fiji and Hawaii from 1838-1842. The United States Exploring Expedition (USExEx), which was documented last year in Nathaniel Philbrick's book "Sea of Glory," is considered a major achievement by historians and scientists.
