WASHINGTON - President Bush will cut short a summer retreat at his Texas ranch to return to Washington today and personally monitor relief efforts in the wake of what the White House called "one of the most devastating storms in our nation's history."
The president also will travel to the hurricane-stricken Gulf Coast region later this week, according to a spokesman, who added that the White House was concerned that a quicker personal survey by Bush might disrupt rescue and recovery efforts under way in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.See the full content of this document
