Cubans Unite in Rights Protest

Summary


As part of a wave of demonstrations by Cuban-Americans across the country in recent days, North Jersey Cuban immigrants said Friday that they and others will stage a protest Saturday in support of political prisoners in Cuba.

Cuba has been thrust into the international spotlight once again with the recent crackdown by police in Cuba on wives and mothers who were marching for the release of their sons and husbands, dissidents who have been jailed since 2003 by the Castro government. The incident involving the Ladies in White, in which Cuban police dragged the women by their hair and put them on buses, made international headlines. Cuban authorities said in reports that the women were removed to keep them away from other Cubans who were taunting them.
