Court Rejects Bryant's Request to Pay Defense Costs

Saying he is unable to pay for his defense, former state Sen. Wayne R. Bryant asked a judge on Wednesday to appoint his two lawyers -- at public expense -- to fight charges he took $192,000 in bribes to support redevelopment projects in the Meadowlands and South Jersey.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo shot down the request, saying there is a pool of highly capable court-approved lawyers available to take his case. But if he accepts one, she said, Bryant will have to pay until his funds dry up.
