Local Gay Couples Not Satisfied with Civil Union Designation

Summary


One year after New Jersey started granting civil unions to same- sex partners, municipalities have issued more than 2,300 licenses across the state. But some gay couples still consider the designation less than equal to marriage, and a state-commissioned report being released today calls it "second-class status."

The handful of local couples who received civil unions which provide all the legal benefits of marriage without the name say it has simplified some aspects of their lives. They now carry one car insurance policy and health benefits package, for example. Friends and families treat their relationship with more respect.
