SECAUCUS -- Construction on a planned $8.7 billion mass transit tunnel that would double the number of NJ Transit and Amtrak trains crossing the Hudson River could begin by June, Governor Corzine said Friday.

But a $3 billion funding gap -- expected to be filled by the federal government -- remains between the tunnel's projected cost and the $5.7 billion already set aside, Corzine said at a press conference in the concourse of the Frank R. Lautenberg Secaucus Junction Station.
